A crucial step in the transport of wine productions, Saint-Jean-d'Angély develops its own production in the Middle Ages when a Benedictine abbey settles in the city. The products coming out of the abbey are routed through the Button River before being dispatchés to their final destination, often more north. The wars of Religion, however, put an end to this flourishing trade, and it will be necessary to wait until the th century for the belle to wake up. The city testifies to this long history where pilgrims met on the road to Santiago de Compostela, wine Growers, Church Men and many other characters who made their wealth.
