This inescapable citadel, dating from 1630, is a military work intended to protect the southern part of the island of Oleron.

A military structure designed to protect the southern part of the island of Oleron, the citadel was built in 1630. Noting the weaknesses of the structure, the chief engineer Vauban decided in 1685 to create two horned works. The work, carried out three years later, required the presence of 7,000 workers, including salt workers from Dolus and Saint-Trojan. Converted into a prison, then housing a garrison, it was hit by a bombing during the Second World War. Not to be missed!

Une citadelle Vauban très bien restauré qui à elle seule vaut le détours par l'ile d'Oléron.

Belle balade
Ce site historique permet une agréable ballade. La visite des remparts peut se poursuivre par la ville et les anciennes cabanes colorées de pêcheurs. Seul petit bémol, en août il fait chaud en plein soleil.

J'ai participé à la visite gratuite de septembre en compagnie de Vauban, c'est très instructif même si c'était dans une ambiance très détendue, apprendre à marcher et saluer comme à cette époque n'est pas si simple mais donne une franche rigolade. Je sais qu'il existe des visites de ce types payantes en saison mais j'ignore si c'est la même chose.
C'est incontournable pour oublier ses soucis pendant 1h30!
