MARITIME FORTIFICATIONS OF LA ROCHELLE

The fortresses that lock the sea in the Charente channels - the best harbor on the Atlantic coast, it is said, sheltered by the islands of Ré and Oléron - protected the former war ports of La Rochelle, Brouage and Rochefort. All the forts (Vauban, Lupin, Liédot...) can be visited, either on foot at low tide or by boat, with the exception of Fort Boyard, which can only be approached. In La Rochelle, the Saint-Nicolas, de la Chaîne and de la Lanterne towers are accessible.
