THE BRIDGE OF LEGEND
Of the three bridges that formerly link the two banks of the Gave's shed, there is only a tiny part of one of them - all of which were destroyed during violent floods in 1732 - but the most famous: the Legend Bridge. It was in 1170 that Queen Sancie, the wife of the Viscount, gave birth to a baby while her husband went to war. Shortly afterwards, he was told that his husband had been killed in combat. The child died as well. The rumor was that she had killed her son and accused her of witchcraft. It was the king of Navarre, his brother, who condemned him to endure the Judgment of God by cold water. We took him to the bridge, we ligota it and threw it into the water. The crowd was carved on the ramparts… It sank, then reappeared and flotta to the shore, alive. She was declared innocent. This bridge of Legend was later fortified. At the entrance to the bridge was a hospital that welcomed the pilgrims of the Compostelle.
