In addition to the abbey (visit only with a guide), take the opportunity to discover its sublime gardens in free access.

This Cistercian site was built in the 12th century under the impetus of the Count of Ponthieu on the gentle slope of a sheltered hillside. The abbey of Valloires was prosperous for many years before it was destroyed by war, looting and fire. Rebuilt in the 18th century, it now displays a great unity of style: the cloister surrounded by vaulted galleries, the chapter house with its superb woodwork and above all the remarkable abbey church, sober on the outside and very richly furnished on the inside. The sculptor Pfaffenhoffen gave free rein to his baroque imagination by creating the organ case in oak and lime wood and the woodwork in the church and the abbey's salons. Jean Veyren, known as "le Vivarais", created the magnificent grills and the astonishing suspension above the main altar. But Valloires Abbey is not only an architectural marvel classified as a historical monument, it is also a place steeped in history, which was transformed into a military hospital during the First World War. In 1922, a French Red Cross nurse, Therese Papillon, founded the Valloires Association, which allowed the creation of a preventorium, dispensaries and the reception of children. Even today, you can only visit the abbey with a guide and not freely because it currently houses a medical-social home for children. In summer (July and August), a great night show is given: Valloires, L'Abbaye Lumière. At each vacation period, a cultural program is offered: dramatized tours, shows, concerts ..
