Wondering what to do and see in Senlis? Here are the 10 must-sees to discover the richness of this town of history and character.

1. Notre-Dame de Senlis Cathedral, a jewel of Gothic architecture

A jewel of Gothic architecture, Notre-Dame de Senlis Cathedral was rebuilt with splendidly flamboyant side facades. The edifice is distinguished by its smaller dimensions than its Picardy neighbors. Erected as early as 1150, it was not consecrated until forty years later. Its original Gothic style underwent several transformations, notably in the 13th century. In 1504, a fire destroyed the roof structure, causing the vaults to collapse. The ensuing reconstruction raised the upper parts of the edifice by six meters, widened the nave by doubling the aisles, and adorned the side façades with sumptuous flamboyant decoration. A must-see in Senlis!

Just a stone's throw from the cathedral, this charming museum invites you to plunge into the fascinating world of hunting with hounds. Spread over three floors, it features a remarkable collection of paintings, drawings and engravingsby great masters such as Dürer and Van der Meulen. You'll also discover hunting costumes, as well as surprising pieces such as naturalized animals- like the majestic stag at the end of the first gallery, or the imposing wild boar on the first floor. This museum, often overlooked by the general public, offers a unique immersion into the splendor and codes of venery under the Ancien Régime. All in a warm and welcoming atmosphere!

3. The spahis museum: a tribute to the Moroccan and Algerian soldiers of Senlis

At the entrance to the Château Royal, a small, discreet museum pays tribute to the Moroccan soldiers (present from 1928 to 1939) and Algerian soldiers (from 1948 to 1962) who left their mark on the history of Senlis. Such a tribute may come as a surprise in a rather bourgeois and uncosmopolitan town, but it makes perfect sense: two cavalry regiments from North Africa were stationed here for several decades. Their presence left a lasting imprint, with some families even choosing to settle in the area permanently. Significantly, at the outbreak of the Second World War , these troops were the last to remain undefeated, until an official order forced them to lay down their arms. This museum, modest in size but rich in symbolism, pays fitting tribute to these men who came to defend France.

Senlis is one of the most beautiful villages in the Oise region, thanks in no small part to its Saint-Pierre church, which is well worth a visit! The church is distinguished by its 47-meter high square tower, crowned by an elegant Renaissance-style dome. The south-facing spire is a superb example of flamboyant Gothic, offering a striking contrast to the more classical lines of the dome. This blend of styles contributes to the building's unique charm. Graffiti left by German soldiers in 1944 can still be seen inside the church. After the French Revolution, the church was used for a variety of purposes, including a chicory factory, military barracks and a covered market. Today, it is once again open to the public, hosting a variety of local cultural events.

Originally, twelve canons and a prior lived there according to the rule of St. Augustine. Although the cloister and church were destroyed shortly after the French Revolution, the eastern wing still survives, transformed over the centuries until the 19th century.
