Medieval castle of the XIIth century dominating a valley, the interior traces its rich history, military garrison and prison in the XIXth century
This 12th-century medieval castle, modified in the 14th and 15th centuries, features a drawbridge, an underground prison and a well. The castle's history is recounted in the surrounding walls, as well as the ups and downs of various conflicts: English domination, reconquest by Gaston de Foix, during which the castle was ransacked and burned, and the Wars of Religion. Dismantled in 1642, it was partially rebuilt in 1648, then in the 19th century served as a military garrison and prison. Beautiful views over the valley. The tour includes audio tracks accessible via QR code. Wooden games for children.

Open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-7 p.m.: April-September daily during zone A school vacations; Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays outside school vacations, weekends and extended public holidays in May/June (except May 1st). Adults: €3. Children (aged 6 to 13): €2 (free for children under 6). Groups (20 people): €2. Listed as a Historic Monument.

Dating back to the 12th century, the fortified castle of Mauléon, just a few kilometers from Béarn, Navarre and Spain, soon proved to be an extremely important site from a strategic point of view. Standing on a hill that juts out like a balcony over the Saison valley, and with a bastide town since the 13th century, it was considered in the 15th century to be "the strongest castel in Guyenne, sitting on its moult haut roc". Inside, a scenography retraces its tumultuous history, and wooden games are available for children. A must-see viewpoint over Mauléon, the Gave valley and the Pyrenees.
Open daily from April 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. during Zone A school vacations. Open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays outside school vacations (zone A). Closed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Open on bank holiday weekends in May and June. Closed on May 1st. The château-fort is closed from September 30 until spring.

Un chemin de randonnée semble lier le bourg de Mauléon au château.
Personne de l'accueil très sympathique.
Gros bémol pour l'accès qui devrait être réservé aux piétons.
En revanche, il vaut mieux s'y rendre à pied dans la mesure où c'est très compliqué en voiture car les rues sont hyper étroites avec des virages en épingle
Bref pour y avoir galéré, je vous le recommande
