BOIL TOWER
A romantic tower built during the Hundred Years' War at the request of the mayor of Beauvais to reinforce protection.
The Tour Boileau, located at 30 rue Têtard in Beauvais, is an emblematic vestige of the city's medieval fortifications. Built in 1489 at the instigation of the mayor of the time, Boileau, it reinforced the defenses near the Porte Saint-Jean after the siege of 1472. This bridge-tower, equipped with floodgates, regulated the course of the Thérain and Avelon rivers, feeding ditches and powering mills downstream. In the 17thᵉ century, it served as a prison for captured Spanish soldiers. Despite the dismantling of the ramparts in the XIXᵉ century, the tower partially survives, today housing the Association des amis de Jeanne Hachette.
