In order to build this theatre in the 19th century, it was necessary to demolish in 1842 the Hôtel du Cornet d'Or, Hôtel des 3 Poissons and Hôtel de l'Ange, as well as the old theatre. Designed by the architect Guy de Caen, it was completed in 1844. Typical of Italian-style theatre, it has a facade derived from Greek art, sculpted in 1854 by Matagrin and Cléron. Until 1914, there was a performance every day: operetta, opera, vaudeville, and it was sold out. It is still today a popular venue for shows.
