LE TRINQUET-JEU DE PAUME
An emblematic place for Basque pelota games, not to be missed for playing pala-ancha, bare hand and jeu de paume
The village's trinquet court is one of the oldest in France, and one of the emblematic sites of Basque pelota games; and jeu de paume, the ancestor of Basque pelota games, is still played here. In fact, it's the oldest paume still in use: a study of the wood used to build the structure dates it back to 1513. It has undergone very few alterations since it was built, and the stone slabs lining each side of the hall are undoubtedly original, the proportions unchanged. Pala-ancha, bare hand and jeu de paume are played here.
