LE PARC D’ARNAGA
One of the most beautiful sites in the Basque Country, a garden designed by Rostand in Cambo-les-Bains.
One of the most beautiful sites in the Basque Country. Les Jardins d'Arnaga is over 110 years old. Edmond Rostand, author of Cyrano de Bergerac, fell in love with the place and built his dream house, surrounded by a French Versailles-style garden with flowerbeds, pergolas and water features. This garden was designed by Rostand himself and laid out in impressive symmetry and surrounded by pruned boxwood, through hydrangea avenues and parkland. Rumor has it that the peacocks, ducks, hens and turkeys frolicking in the park were the inspiration for the poet's play Chantecler, written in 1910. Behind a small gate lies an English-style garden. Extensive restoration work, completed in 2014, is restoring the gardens to their former glory. Thanks to period documents, the original lines and decorations are back, the poets' corner has been rebuilt, the kilometers of sheaths have been concealed, and the original topiaries have returned... On this exceptional site, you'll discover several themed gardens - at the entrance, an alpine garden, with its staging of rocky screes, an ornamental wood, which extends over the slopes of the estate, a large formal garden that occupies the entire plateau and an English garden at the end of the spur, which is part of the conservatoire des Jardins et Paysages, an association founded in 1985, and the spectacular water mirror to reflect the house!
