It was in 1849 that the inhabitants of Préfailles and summer visitors decided to build the Notre-Dame-de-Préfailles chapel. The Prefellais were in fact overwhelmed by walking every Sunday to the church of La Plaine-sur-Mer, and decided to contribute to build their own chapel. This is how the Notre-Dame Chapel was created. The first stone, transported from the point of Saint-Gildas, was extracted from the block of rock on which Saint Gildas would have approached, leaving in the rock the trace of his feet and his stick. The chapel was completed at the end of 1852. It was blessed by the Bishop of Nantes on July 18, 1854, and was enlarged in 1900 with two side chapels.
