France's second lighthouse, raised in the open sea, and one of the most important on the Atlantic coast, with a range of 21 nautical miles
Classified as a historical monument, the Phare du Four is located at the northeastern end of the Plateau du Four, 3.5 miles west of the Pointe du Croisic. Construction began in 1816 and was completed in 1821 (commissioned in 1822). As its height proved insufficient, the lighthouse was raised by 6.20 meters in 1946. The cylindrical granite masonry tower is 23 m high. It was the second lighthouse in France to be built on the open sea. With a range of 21 nautical miles, it is one of the most important lighthouses on the Atlantic coast. It was automated in 1983. It is remote-controlled and unmanned.
