SAINT SEVERUS CHURCH
Church with a nave of five bays with broken arches and a bell tower-porch covered by a terrace with railings
Church with three vessels vaulted with warheads, Saint-Sévère d'Assat, was built in 1873 on the site of a Romanesque building. It has a nave with five bays with broken arches and a bell tower-porch covered with a terrace with railings. The tympanum of the main gate is carved with a relief representing the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. Finally, the glass roofs of the nave were made by the Toulouse master glassmaker Louis-Victor Gesta. Its originality lies in its remarkable mural paintings: its choir is decorated with two large frescoes in orientalist style executed at the beginning of the 20th century by the Palois Henri-Joseph Castaing (1860-1918). In addition, in 1896 seven paintings were given to the factory council. They are attributed to 17th century Spanish schools and are classified as Historic Monuments. A beautiful discovery in the heart of Béarn!
