Town hall of Calais of neo-Flemish style, connected to its famous belfry of 78 m high by an arch-passage.
At 78 metres high, the belfry is one of Calais' must-see monuments... but it tends to overshadow the town hall, to which it is linked by an archway. This imposing architectural complex of red bricks from Courtrai and white stones is full of treasures: Art Deco glass roof, staircase decorated with stained glass windows from the Dagrant workshops, a superb wedding hall... The Calais town hall is typical of the neo-Flemish style, with Renaissance influences.

Au sommet, en faisant le tour du chemin de ronde, on découvre une vue imprenable sur la ville et ses alentours. Et les détails des quatre chevaliers et des éléments architecturaux que l'on ne voit évidemment pas très bien depuis le bas.
La montée se fait sans difficulté par ascenseur. Pour les plus courageux, un escalier est également à disposition. Quelques marches, ce n'est pas grand chose finalement.

You can see it from far away, but mostly because the buildings around here rarely go beyond two floors. ????
In fact, anything above the third floor around Calais usually means the state paid for it. ????
The belfry itself isn’t exactly ugly, but it does feel… off. ????
It radiates something fake—like it was dropped in from a postcard of another city. ✈️
It doesn’t fit the architecture of the area. ????
It doesn’t fit the spirit of the area. ????
It doesn’t even match the colors or materials of the surrounding buildings. ????
It sticks out, not like a centerpiece, but like something trying too hard to matter. ????
You look at it and get the feeling it was built more for show than for soul. ????
I guess if I had to sum it up in one word, it would be tacky. ????
