Lighthouse that measures 51 meters and has 271 steps in Calais.
A lighthouse existed on top of the Watchtower since 1818. The one we know today was decided by Louis-Philippe in his plan to improve French ports. Put into service in 1848, the monument resisted the bombing of the city during the Second World War. It is 51 metres high and you will have to climb its 271 steps to enjoy the view. On a clear day, the range of the lamp is 43 kilometres! At the lighthouse, visits are made by friendly young people who are really passionate about the work of the Opale Tour association.

Such an ugly phallic symbol, rising out of nowhere. ????
Made of cement, with no personality—just tall for the sake of being tall. ????
And even then, it’s not that tall—it only seems that way because the buildings around it are so small. ????
It’s a lighthouse, technically, though it feels more like a leftover from another era. ????️
These days, boats use GPS, so maybe it’s just here to guide submarines. ????
Getting here is a mood-killer—you pass warehouses, empty lots, and a general sense of neglect. ????
The weather doesn’t help either: gray skies, wind, and damp air only make the whole thing feel more depressing. ????️
In the end, it’s just an ugly construction. ????
And ironically, it stands as one of the few “towers” in the proud town of Calais. ????️
