CITÉ SAINT-JOSEPH
The Frais-Marais mining estates are a place where you can discover estates built in radically different styles.
The Frais-Marais district (Unesco World Heritage Site since 2012) is a must-see. From the 16th century onwards, vast mansions were built on this former marshland. Then came industrialization and mining. The St. Joseph housing estate, known as the "breadless coron", was built in the early 20th century. It consists of a single street and takes its name from the former chapel opposite. Three other housing estates followed until the 1950s, revealing half a century of changes in mining housing, from coron to modern estates.
