Old Douai will charm you with its mansions, belfry and fortifications. Although the first traces of settlement on the site date back to the 7th century in the sacred islet, it was above all the 12th century that gave Douai a certain stature. Taking advantage of the Scarpe River, the town developed an internationally-renowned cloth industry and obtained its town charter at the same time. The 14thcentury marked a real turning point in the town's history, with the construction of a belfry on the Place des Halles. The economy flourished, and Douai also played an important role in the grain industry, as evidenced by the Place d'Armes.
