PORTE D'ARRAS
One of the very last vestiges of the town's medieval fortifications to be seen, consisting of 2 squat, blind sandstone towers
The Porte d'Arras is one of the last vestiges of the town's medieval fortifications. It consists of two squat, blind sandstone towers, 11 meters high and 8 meters in diameter. It was built in the 14th century! The drawbridge separating the towers, which itself overlooks a moat, allows free passage. Above all, it's easy to imagine the building's ancient appearance. For example, Charles V had the two conical roofs that originally topped the towers removed. Similarly, the empty niche between the two towers used to house a statue of the Virgin Mary. The Porte d'Arras has been listed as a historic monument since 1945.
