The town is surrounded by 7 hills, like Rome or Lisbon, but that's the only thing they have in common. Even so, as you enter Lamarche, you'll be able to see a few reminders of the past, such as the remains of the town's castle, destroyed in 1636, when only ten souls remained in the western Vosges village. On one of the 7 hills to the north-east of Lamarche lies the priory of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, founded in the 12th century. Located at the crossroads of Lorraine, Champagne and Franche-Comté, Lamarche is an ancient fortified town. Strongly influenced by its past, the village is a skilful blend of Gothic and Romanesque art.
