The capital of slimness owes its reputation to one man, Dr. Bagard, physician to King Stanislas Leszczynski of Poland. In 1760, King Leszczynski asked his physician to write a report on the city's springs. The medicinal virtues of the springs soon caught on, and the nobility turned the spa into a fashionable town. Famous names such as the Shah of Persia and Queen Isabella of Spain came here to take the waters. Quite a crowd for a resort with calciferous waters full of magnesium, gushing out of the ground at 10°C. Thermalism gave birth to bottled water. 800 million bottles of Contrex are sold every year.
