SAINT PAUL'S DOOR
A gate with two drawbridges, battlements and machicolations, a well-preserved Verdun monument worth discovering.
Broken through the ramparts in the 19th century, it consists of two arches (entrance/exit), each served by a drawbridge. It provided a link between the Verdun railway station, from which conscripts would flock, and the town center, in particular the Jeanne d'Arc barracks. In the 1920s, the destruction of the ramparts, already weakened by bombardments, was completed. Only the Porte Saint-Paul was spared, and is now highlighted by commemorative steles in tribute to the victory at Verdun and the rebuilding of the town. Well-preserved, it's well worth a visit.
