CASTLE DOOR
Porte Châtel, built in the century and listed as a historic monument, is Verdun's highest point.
This is the town's oldest gate. Built in the 12th century, the Porte Châtel is part of the ancient ramparts that encircled the upper town. It is the highest point in Verdun (226 m). Regularly modified, its final form was that desired by Sébastien Le Prestre, Marquis de Vauban. Components of the medieval defensive fortifications, such as machicolations and loopholes, are still visible. After the First World War, the Porte Châtel was cleared to the right to allow vehicles to pass through.
