Monument to all the French units that fought in the Esnes-en-Argonne sector.
On 21 February 1916, the advance of the German troops on the right bank was greatly slowed down; they came under heavy fire from the French artillerymen stationed on the left bank. They then decided to change their strategy. On 6 March, they attacked hill 304 and the Mort-Homme simultaneously in order to surround Verdun. The fighting raged and the French held out admirably for three months. Although the enemy had suffered up to 70% losses, they finally took hill 304, but could go no further. It was not until the offensive of 20-24 August 1917 that it was finally resumed after 300 days of fighting and the loss of 10,000 poilus. On 14 June 1934, Philippe Pétain inaugurated a monument paying tribute to all the French units that had fought in the area. The name of each one is engraved on the memorial.
