CHÂLUCET CASTLE
This medieval fortress of the XIIth century, is still undergoing important consolidation and rehabilitation works
On a steep spur overlooking the Ligoure valley, the remains of Châlucet stand amidst the woods. This 12th-century medieval fortress, a listed historic monument, is still undergoing major consolidation and restoration work. A new room has just been opened. Excavations are now enabling us to learn more about the site's history. There were two fortified parts: Châlucet-haut and its castle, of which only sections of the walls remain and cannot be visited, and Châlucet-bas, a real village with its streets and gardens gathered around its "Jeannette" tower - a name whose origin is still a mystery. The view from the top of its square keep is superb: an incomparable 360° vantage point over the Limousin forest.
To find out more about Châlucet and its enigmas, you can visit the site with the "Haute-Vienne Explor Games®" application, downloadable for mobile phones and tablets: a fun trail and numerous challenges (tablets available at the Visitor Centre). Theatrical tours also take place from time to time: walk in the footsteps of the 13th-century lord of the manor, Géraud de Maulmont, who will reveal the secrets of the fortress.
The Châlucet-Ligoure site is magical in many ways. It's here, too, that the Briance and Ligoure streams meet, and you can hear them murmuring under the tall trees... Discover the 7 km interpretation trail that runs from the castle into the Ligoure forest (a nature park classified as a ZNIEFF).
