VASSIVIÈRE LAKE
The largest stretch of water in the Limousin region, a place for water sports activities and geocaching trails for unusual discoveries.
On the borders of Haute-Vienne and Creuse, and close to Corrèze, Lac de Vassivière is the largest body of water in the Limousin region, a veritable inland sea. With a thousand hectares of crystal-clear water and five bathing sites, it offers a wide range of water sports, from pedal boats and motorboats to canoes, towed buoys, water-skiing and sailing, and you can even take your boating licence. Depart from Auphelle for a guided cruise. As for fishing, the lake is home to carnivores in general, and trout in particular. Numerous hiking trails have been laid out around the lake, including one that circles the entire lake for 30 km: the Sentier de rives, with picnic areas. Kilometers of marked trails can be found on the "rando-Millevaches" website and app. Practical shuttle boats provide links between various points on the lake, and the little train takes you to the island where the lighthouse of the Centre International d'Art Contemporain stands, with its fine collections waiting to be discovered. You won't want to miss the temporary or permanent open-air works at the Bois de sculptures, or the visit to the Centre international d'art contemporain, which you can also reach via the pedestrian footbridge from the Pierrefitte peninsula. There's plenty going on all summer long, with typical villages to discover and various Tèrra Aventura geocaching trails for an unusual discovery off the beaten track.
