MANUFACTURE DE PORCELAINE BERNARDAUD
Manufacture built in 1863, exploring the stages of porcelain manufacture from raw material to finished product.
Maison Bernardaud is a porcelain manufacturer based in Limoges. For over 150 years, this family-run business has combined innovation and tradition in porcelain: table services, limited editions, jewelry... Each creation is unique. Bernardaud was awarded the Entreprises du Patrimoine Vivant label in 2006, and is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year.
History. It all began in 1863, when two Limousin industrialists opened a porcelain factory. An apprentice stood out in one of the workshops: Léonard Bernardaud, who joined the two founders twenty years later. From the 1900s onwards, he expanded production and opened up new international markets. In 1949, his sons Jacques and Michel invested in a "tunnel kiln", powered 24 hours a day by gas instead of wood. The factory now combined industrial quality with the demands of craftsmanship. In addition, designer Raymond Loewy created the first contemporary porcelain service. We're now in the5th generation!
Plus. An annual exhibition of contemporary porcelain is held from June to March. A discovery tour explains the history of the company and how porcelain is made. You'll come away from your visit with a completely new idea of porcelain, its possibilities and its challenges (notably ecological). A boutique and factory store are also open to visitors.
