Housed in a former guinguette, the museum alternates between permanent collections and temporary exhibitions

It was in 1857 that the Fournaise family arrived on the island of Chatou: Monsieur set up his boat-building workshop and Madame her restaurant, which became a meeting place for many artists. A visit to the Fournaise museum, housed in a derelict former guinguette on the banks of the Seine, is like immersing yourself in the cradle of Impressionism. This bucolic setting, with the islands in the distance, alternates between its permanent collections, with an immersive experience in Renoir's era and hologram characters who speak to us - and even from the mirrors - and temporary exhibitions during the rest of the year. Educational activities are organized for children, as well as an Impressionist light festival in the Fournaise hamlet. Audioguides are available for visits to the garden and the Fournaise house, or even books for those who aren't interested in the tour: here, we take care of everyone, leaving no one behind! Virtual reality helmets (in French and English) are also available for those unable to climb the stairs. Tours depart every 30 minutes for groups of 15. A large vintage canoe suspended on the first floor, in the tradition of those built by Monsieur Fournaise.

A must-see and fascinating place to discover for its recreations of period settings. 2024 will mark the 150th anniversary of Impressionism: not to be missed!

La maison Fournaise in Île des Impressionnistes, is a former ''guinguette'' located on the Island of the Impressionists, in Chatou, just outside of Paris. It is a quite unique place, in fact a restaurant and museum. It is considered also a museum, due to its history connected with the impressionists. It is a must-see by Impressionist lovers. I recommend you to combine a visit to Giverny (the house and the gardens of Monet) with a visit and a lunch at La Fournaise, in a full day memorable tour. La maison Fournaise is worth a visit and a lunch ! 4 stars for food and 5 stars for atmosphere ! Recommended to go only in late spring, summer and early autumn.
