LE DIVAN DU MONDE
The turbulent history of this concert hall takes nothing away from the quality of its current programming. This place was first open in the form of a ball room in 1861 then, the ball room becomes quickly a brasserie (frequented especially by Charles Baudelaire), it constantly changed its name until becoming a pornographic cinema under the name "Théâtre de la Comédie Mondaine" in 1901. It is its sulphurous reputation which undoubtedly made it possible to keep it in place! It is here that the striptease was born and it is also here that a naked actress was seen on stage for the first time (or lightly dressed with a see-through pink underwear, which, at the time, is roughly the same). Pablo Picasso and Toulouse-Lautrec were faithful regulars. Today, the Divan du Monde has settled down and has as a reference to its bubbling past only a part of its name taken from the "Divan japonais", another former name of this establishment. The place is well known by Parisian because the room is pleasant although small and the atmosphere is warm and relaxed here. If you wish, you can wiggle on the dance floor, all for an affordable price altogether for quality concerts!
