Fourteenth century castle overlooking the Garonne, home to the largest dungeon in France, frescoes representing St. Peter and St. Michael

Château de Langoiran was built in the early 14th century by Étienne d'Escoussans, lord of Langoiran and ally of the English during the Hundred Years' War. Overlooking the Garonne and offering a clear view of the river, the building did not enjoy a very strategic position, but it did control access to the river, which ensured him an income from duties and taxes on goods transiting the river. Nevertheless, the seigneury of Langoiran was one of the most prestigious and powerful in the Duchy of Aquitaine. Over the years, the property passed through the hands of a number of leading Gironde figures, eventually becoming the residence of the President of the Bordeaux Parliament in the 17th century. At 19 meters high, the château was besieged in 1649 during the Fronde and eventually abandoned. Acquired by Robert Bibonne in 1972, he continued to restore the site. Despite numerous alterations over the centuries, it still retains an enclosure reminiscent of its defensive role. The most remarkable feature is the keep, which, according to Léo Drouyn, is "the most beautiful tower in the Gironde department". It's also the widest in France. Inside, you'll still find frescoes depicting Saint Peter and Saint Michael. You won't be disappointed. Guided tours are available for groups of 10 or more. Medieval events on May 24/25 and July 26/27, 2025 (with Saturday night show).

Highly recommend.
Easy to park. Friendly welcome. Only €4pp. Open from 2pm onwards. Self guided tours only with information binders in various languages available. The owner/curator was really friendly and we chatted for a while after the visit. You can take your time to explore and to enjoy the beautiful views. While the castle is fairly small and currently being restored in places it is still well worth a short visit for its ancient beauty and history.
We'd also recommend a visit and tour of the nearby Lillet Maison and Parc Chavat in Podensac if you're in the area.
- Not to be confused with the Langoiran winery just down the road.
