The history of Château de Cadillac is closely linked to that of Jean-Louis de Nogaret de La Valette, the first Duc d'Epernon, an ambitious character who, after a stint as a protégé at the court of Henri III, went on to become an important figure under Henri IV and Louis XIII. Louis XIII, elevated to the rank of duke by Henri III, married Marguerite de Foix-Candale, heiress of the lord of Cadillac. At Henri IV's instigation, he had the ancient medieval château des Foix demolished to build a sumptuous residence to rival the luxurious royal residences. Work began in 1599 and took almost 30 years to complete. After being damaged during the French Revolution, the château was acquired by the State, turned into a women's prison and remained so for 130 years. Later, it was used as a reformatory for girls until the middle of the 20th century. Now restored, the château's sumptuous interior, with its panelled ceilings, tapestries and monumental marble fireplaces, bears witness to its rich heritage. The château is an outstanding example of French Renaissance architecture. A one-hour guided or self-guided tour of the château reveals its fascinating history and many architectural treasures. Various cultural activities (exhibitions, shows, discovery tours, events) are offered throughout the year. Free admission on the first Sunday of January, February, March, November and December.
