CITY HOTEL DISTRICTS, MERIDECK, SAINT-SEURIN
The Hôtel de Ville district is home to the innovative Tribunal de Grande Instance, built by Richard Rogers in 1998
The Hôtel de Ville district was built between the 18th and 19th centuries with the partial destruction of the Hâdont fort (its imposing ruins are still visible near the Ecole Nationale de la Magistrature). The construction of the Saint-André Hospital took place in 1833, followed by the construction of the Law Courts in 1846. Today, architecture lovers come to admire the innovative Tribunal de Grande Instance, built by Richard Rogers in 1998. As for Place Pey-Berland, it has become a place to live, populated by lovers of terraces, public benches, urban gliding and historical monuments: visit the remarkable Saint-André Cathedral and its bell tower! The Mériadeck district was a vast marsh that Cardinal François de Sourdis decided to drain at the beginning of the 17th century. The stalls, typical houses of Bordeaux workers and craftsmen, flourished here in the 19th century. It was only in 1955 that the municipality decided to completely renovate this sometimes precarious residential area, which was described by the former inhabitants of Bordeaux as "malfamé". In 1963, the district will become the administrative and business centre. The Mériadeck shopping centre attracts a large crowd, further increased by the arrival of the tramway on its doorstep!
