Built between 1680 and 1689, the Citadel of Blaye, with Fort Paté and Fort Médoc, is part of the Vauban Lock.

Situated on the Gironde estuary, this famous citadel, nicknamed "Le Bijou de Vauban", was built in the 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV. Part of the Verrou Vauban, along with Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc, it bears witness to the military art of Vauban, the great military engineer of the time. Since 2008, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The citadel can be visited on foot through the underground passageways, or, more relaxing, by miniature train! And for the more adventurous, escape games are organized in the dungeons...

we discovered blaye in February...the citadel is superb for us the largest construction of Vauban that is completely free to visit it on foot
off-season can of things are open but at least you can discover the citadel peacefully
We went at the end of April and we were disappointed enough. All was closed!
