THE CHURCH OF SAINTE-MARIE-MAJEURE
Church of baroque style, a site full of history, where several Christians would have suffered martyrdom, in the lower town of Calvi.
The Baroque-style front of this church in the lower town is painted pink and beige. According to hagiographic legend, several Christians were martyred here on the orders of the emperor Diocletian. One of the victims, Restituta, a wealthy Roman patrician who had taken refuge in Calvi, was arrested by Corsican prefect Pyrrhus, tried, tortured and beheaded on May 21, 304. Her relics now rest in the Romanesque chapel at Calenzana.
