The city of Châtillon is mentioned in 931 in a charter. It formed at the foot of the castle but sheltered from the river, and owes its name to the circular tower, called Caesar's tower, high by Coots-Nerra.The city took refuge in a forum in the second half of the th century and the collegiate Saint-Outrille, built outside the walls in the th century, ended up in a century later integrated into the enclosure.The bastion is flanked by twelve square towers. During the transformation of the old castle into a residential dungeon, a part of the city's enclosure was rasera.
