A remarkable Gothic cathedral, the last of the century, a must-see in Lille.

This building combines neo-Gothic and modern inspirations. And with good reason: its construction lasted... from 1854 to 1999! Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille, then a basilica, was not designated a cathedral until 1914 by Pope Pius X. Provisionally clad in brick in 1947, the façade took on its definitive appearance in the 1990s, thanks to the style of Pierre-Louis Carlier and Peter Rice. The astonishing façade of the Treille remains one of the city's must-sees. On sunny days, the square is a popular place to take a break on the steps or enjoy a drink on the terrace.

C'est la cathédrale-basilique de Lille aujourd'hui un peu excentré du centre vivant de la ville. L'église a connu de grandes vicissitudes pour sa construction par manque d'argent surtout.Commencée avec un plan non suivi en 1854,elle ne sera terminée qu'en1999.

Etrange mélange que cette cathédrale : la façade qui s'orne de deux portes d'entrée est constitutée d'une surface grise et austère, percée d'une rosace moderne en son centre. Une fois à l'intérieur : cette rosace moderne et originale est intéressante, et plus on s'avance vers l'intérieur de la cathédrale plus les jeux de couleurs sont nombreux notamment sur de nombreux vitraux très colorés. L'orgue est de cette cathédrale est de belle taille. Un endroit à visiter malgré la façade non conventionnelle!

Tout l'intérêt de la cathédrale réside dans sa façade, mais vue de l'intérieur. En effet, de l'extérieur, elle est grise et insignifiante, mais une fois à l'intérieur, on découvre un jeu de lumières et de transparences très original.
