ALCAZABA

Military monuments
4.3/5

Built between the xie and the xivth century by the Maures, it served both as a military fortress and as a royal residence. A testimony of medieval times and of the Taifa malagueña, it consists of several concentric walls punctuated by towers. The site is splendid, especially since the Alcazaba was renovated at the beginning of the century. With bougainvillea and cypress scattered on both sides. An Archeological Museum displays the remains found in the Alcazaba (potteries, Roman statues…) and is housed in the palace; At his feet, we can observe the presence of the Roman theater dating back to the era of the Emperor Augustus.

This is the purely military part of the Alhambra. It dates from the th century. There is the place of weapons. The houses and barracks of the soldiers were there. You can see only the traces of the pieces, delimited by small walls. On the left you will see the Jardin garden with its cypress trees, flowers and many fountains. the painter Fortuny came to spend his afternoon. The tower of the Vela or the Campana (the Catholic Kings made it a bell to tell the peasants the time of watering the fields) offers a splendid view of the city, but also on the peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

There is a beautiful place near the cathedral, enliven by jacarandes from South America, offering beautiful purple flowers. This restored fortress of the th century has beautiful courtyards, gardens and Arab baths and has no less than towers, the best preserved being those of the En and the Octagonal. In 1264, during the re-conquest of the city by Alphonse X the Wise, the tower of the En was transformed into a royal residence and the mosque became the chapel Santa María la Real. Since its turn, the Palacio Villavicencio offers a good view of the city. recently restored, it contains a oscura oscura (dark room), which allows to perfect the panoramic vision of the city, always interesting to discover Jerez.

Well refurbished through restoration work. 0 n enjoy gardens and beautiful prospects on the valley, the monumental city with beautiful colors and the Peña de los Enamorados loaded with legends. From the Del tower, sunsets are worth a visit! The castle, which dominates the city, was built in the th century on the remains of a Roman building. It is possible to bypass the walls by entering the bow of the Giants (arco de los Gigantes) from the th century.

ALCAZABA

It is the main tourist attraction of Almería. After the Alhambra of Granada, it is the largest of the citadels built by the Arabs in the Iberian Peninsula and probably one of the most beautiful Andalusian fortresses because of its construction and its location on a hill from where you can superbly overlook the whole city, the medina and the modest district of La Chanca with its colourful facades. Looking at the Mediterranean horizon from the towers, we can better understand why the city became the most important sea exit from Al-Andalus. The Alcazaba was built by Abd al-Rahman III in 955, transformed and enlarged by Al-Mansur and then by Hayran, the first independent Emir of Almeria. It has three enclosures, two of Muslim design and a third of Christian origin. It was abandoned in the 19th century and restored in 1950. The visit of the first enclosure allows you to cross a whole area of very pleasant gardens with fragrant plants. In total, the tour includes 19 points that will introduce you to the Casa del Alcalde, built at the beginning of the 20th century by Prieto Moreno as a romantic tribute to the Alhambra, as well as Muslim casas reconstructed to evoke their domestic aspect and permanent exhibition sites. Both are located in the second enclosure and next to it you will find something to refresh yourself. Allow two hours for this visit. It can be completed by an ascent to the hillside of San Cristobal, the best viewpoint in the city.

The red ochre silhouette of this fortress, built in the 10th and 11th centuries and enlarged during the Nazari period, is noteworthy. But it is also remarkable for its location as a viewpoint from the walls, which allows you to observe the cave district on one side and the rest of the city on the other. Long closed, it should be accessible again in 2019 via a footbridge.
