RICHMOND NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD PARK - HISTORIC TREDEGAR

Richmond National Battlefield Park is not a battlefield as there are some elsewhere in the country. Richmond having been the confederacy capital, several scattered battles were held around the town, true target for unionistic ones, and some notable buildings played a key role for the camp of the South. These are the various sites that are grouped in this national park.

We invite you to begin with Visitor Center de Tredegar, located at the edge of James River, in downtown Richmond. This museum, housed in a metallurgical factory, complexes industrial key during the war, offers a thorough vision of the conflict. Visitor Center will give you the indications to go by your own means on various sites that make up the national park, sometimes located a few kilometres from the city, including the battlefields of Glendale- Malvern Hill, Fort Harrison or Cold Harbor. In Richmond even, you will not fail to visit Chimborazo Medical Museum, the largest military hospital created by Confederate, where you fancy the countless repatriated wounded soldiers face.

APPOMATTOX COURT HOUSE NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK

It is in the small village of Appomattox Court House that end was to take on April 1865 the terrible fratricidal war that during four years the armies were delivered unionistic and confederate, North and South, leaving behind them more than 620,000 dead. After its rout with the siege of Petersburg and abandoned its Richmond capital burned, the army of the Southern general Robert E. Lee is secluded to Appomattox, followed by the troops Yankees. Follow the battles of Sailor's Creek, Appomattox Station and Appomattox Court House after which Lee will sign in the presence of unionistic general Ulysses S. Grant surrendered its camp, in the house of Wilmer and Virginia McLean. It is the end of the adventure of the Confederate States of America, independent State dream by the South.

The major attraction of the park is the visit of the house where Mc Lean surrendered was signed. After the war, the property was bought by some developers who wanted to enjoy its reputation by dismounting the house to rebuild it with the Colombian exhibition of Chicago (1893) or in Washington D.C. The house has been dismantled, but the material batteries were abandoned on site due to legal and financial problems.

More than 50 years later, on April 1940, the Us Congress creates Appomattox Court House National Historical Monument and the reconstruction of the residence and the environment are undertaken. In April 1950, the ribbon of inauguration is cut by direct descendants of generals Lee and Grant.

Other points of interest of the park are the general headquarters of general Lee and the general Grant, the apple tree at the foot of which Lee expected the answer of the general Grant following his request for surrendered, and some other pilot places of the last hours of the American Civil war.

NATURAL BRIDGE OF VIRGINIA

Natural Bridge is a geological formation in which Cedar Creek, a small tributary of the James River, carved a gorge in the limestone field. This beautiful natural arch is 66 m high and 27 m wide. It is registered as a historical site of Virginia and a national historic site. The site offers several attractions related to the presence of this ark: access to caves, reconstruction of an Indian village, wax museum depicting the history of Natural Bridge, butterfly garden.

SAILOR'S CREEK BATTLEFIELD HISTORICAL STATE PARK

Located about ten kilometres east of Appomattox battlefield, this is the last major battles of the American Civil War, before fighting and the surrendered Appomattox. The battle of Little Sailor's Creek played a role in determines the exit of the war because the Army of Virginia in the North of the general Lee lost 7,700 men including 8 generals, like a bit of bludgeon in the name of general southern. 72 hours after, in Appomattox, it left the weapons.
