Practical information : Take a break Jamaica
Timetable
Coffee shops are generally open early in the morning and close around 5 or 6pm, so you're more likely to come for a good Blue Mountains coffee in the morning or a gourmet break in the afternoon, with a good exotic fruit ice cream. Bars are open until late at night, depending on the location and atmosphere! Many American-style bars offer happy hours. In tourist areas, cafés and bars are open every day, while in the city they are generally closed on Sundays.
Budget & Tips
National brand Red Stripe beers don't cost much. For cocktails, you'll have to shell out between US$5 and US$10, depending on the bar, and on the composition, as many use low-end sodas. Ask for fresh fruit juices blended into your rum!
Age restrictions
In Jamaica, the legal drinking age is 18, and you may be asked to show proof of identity.
What's very local
Ginger beer, which is a non-alcoholic, non-beer ginger ale, is a popular local drink that's best enjoyed chilled and is very sweet.
Kids
Children are welcome in beach and town cafés, as well as in beach bars... The sandy vacation spots remain child-friendly, with many concerts organized early in the evening to delight the little ones.
Smokers
You can smoke in Jamaican bars, indoors or outdoors, whatever you like. In fact, opaque wisps of ganja smoke often escape from the terraces of bars and even cafés at all hours!
