MARCHÉ FORAIN DE SAINT-PAUL

Market
4.5/5
14 reviews

Situated on the seafront, it is the busiest (and most crowded) market on the island. Craftsmen and farmers come from all over the island to sell local products, fruits, vegetables, samoussas, cakes (potato, chouchou...), fish, etc... You will also find clothes, baskets, jewellery, trinkets and even instruments such as kayamb. We advise you to come early on Friday to take advantage of the morning wind and avoid the crowd.

MARCHÉ FORAIN DE SAINT-LEU

Market
5/5

There is a small, friendly market on the seafront, which offers mainly fruit and vegetables, but also a few ready-to-wear stalls and some handicrafts. Unfortunately, its growing popularity has attracted many sellers of imported products without much interest. But don't let that spoil your stroll, a glass of fresh fruit juice in one hand and samoussas in the other while your basket fills up with all kinds of local products.

A festival of colours and scents for this market, coming in third place in #YourMostBeautifulMarket in 2018 and 2019. It is also one of the least expensive on the island. Along the waterfront, fill up on vanilla, glean tempting recipes, familiarize yourself with the various chili peppers of the island or buy faham leaves, not found in France, to marinate in your rum arranger. On the handicraft side, original jewellery and quality Malagasy creations. Here, you will leave with vitamins in your body and smiles in your eyes.

MARCHÉ COUVERT

Market
4/5
2 reviews

Initiated in 1844 in the town centre of Saint-Paul, this small market was composed in the 19th century of a long house and two halls surrounded by a high rubble wall. In 1976, it was covered with reinforced concrete shells. Although turned towards Malagasy handicrafts, you will find there the same products as on the fairground market of the sea front, the atmosphere in less. But here, it is less expensive. The negotiation is easier when you buy in groups... You can also eat good Creole food far from the crowd.

To the east of the same street, the food market offers fruits and vegetables from the Hauts (bringelles, chouchous, margozes, jujubes, zévis, tamarins...). You can buy spices (saffron péi, combava, calou-pilé, cardamom, massalé, ginger...) and handicrafts. You can stop at a stand of fresh fruit juice, pancakes or enjoy a Mauritian meal. Even if you don't want to buy anything, take a stroll for the colours, smells and shouts of the vendors. Tourists and Reunionese meet at the small market for this atmosphere!

Completely renovated and inaugurated in December 2014, it hosts seven huts dedicated to the sale of local and artisanal (really made in Reunion) and quality products. You are sure to find a small souvenir "Made by Reunion", certified by this label created by the Chamber of Crafts to promote local crafts: musical instruments, ceramics, braiding... MARCHÉ COUVERT

Bulk grocery

Entering the Cilaos covered market is like being transported decades back in time. On a small surface, in an organized bazaar where everything is mixed, you can find spices, dried fish... and of course Cilaos lentils. The prices are handwritten on pieces of cardboard packaging. This atypical gap is a must for a visit to the rue du Père Boiteau. We also advise you to visit the fairground market, rue des Écoles, every Sunday morning to discover the local craftsmen and producers. It is well worth the detour.

MARCHÉ BIO DE L'ÉPERON

Openair market

This small, rather confidential organic market is held every Saturday morning in the heart of the "village artisanal de l'Éperon" on rue Fond Générèse. A handful of stallholders offer local fruit and vegetables, bread, honey, natural cosmetics, sugarcane juice and delicacies... The market isn't very big, so you'll soon get round it, but it's a very pleasant place to wander around. You'll find it easy to talk to Réunion's farmers and craftsmen. A great initiative by the École du jardin planétaire and the Association de développement de l'Éperon.
