GREAT ENCLOSURE

Local history and culture

1 review

Located in the valley, at the foot of the hill, this set consists of a 100 m diameter compound and 243 m circumference, the walls of which can reach 11 m height and 6 m thick. Great enclosure of sub-Saharan Africa, Great Enclosure, just like Hill Complex, was a royal palace whose function was not protective but ostentatious, it was to spread its wealth and power! He was probably served by the kingdom of the kingdom, as well as their children: Beads, bracelets, necklaces and even gold earrings were found during excavations. Built a century and a half after the hill complex, Great Enclosure represents the apogee of rozvi sculpture: if the walls, as in the other ensembles, have been constructed with cleverly woven stones, they appear more often decorated with chevron motifs and mainly a conical high tower, which appears as the most complete construction of Rozvi masonry. This tower, flanked by a similar conical building but much less imposing, is 10 m high and can be joined by a narrow corridor of 70 m in length. Since the discovery of the city, it has raised questions of researchers, who have not yet managed to agree on its exact origin and use: some see it as a phonic representation symbolizing fertility; others believe that it was used as a altar during the initiatic or religious ceremonies (at the top of the tower, a stone platform covered with charcoal and bone bones was found); Some still see it as a huge grain attic… if none of these theories has yet been verified, the design (O quel romantic) that the tower would have sheltered the royal treasure of Rozvi dynasties was categorically denied by some archeologists of dreams…

HILL COMPLEX

Archaeological site
5/5
1 review

This part of the city, the first of its kind to be invested by local populations, represents a real architectural tower: rather than imposing the form of their constructions on the environment, the builders of the time have balanced their buildings from existing rocks. Stone walls and walls were built according to the configuration of rock overflows and granitic blocks. For example, faults were transformed into access corridors, a natural amphitheater became a ritual place, etc. The whole is located at the top of a hill, 80 m above the valley. He sheltered successive sovereigns from the kingdom as well as their advisers and mediums. In the eastern part of Hill Complex, some steps actually lead to a half-circle square dominated by a huge rock. It was undoubtedly served by courthouses, but mainly by religious centers: there were objects of ceremony in bronze, as well as six sculptures of birds in steatite. Three more or less dicus paths lead to the Hill Complex, from where you can have beautiful views of Great Enclosure.

DANGER POINT

All east of falls, facing the Rainbow Falls, is Danger Point. From this end, it is possible to observe the waters throughout the gorge. Careful, as its name indicates, you must be careful because no barrier or vegetation borders the cliff, we are literally above the void. The point is dangerous, vertiginous, but sensational.

These are the main falls. Certainly the most impressive panorama. An immense curtain with a throughput of almost one million m 3 per minute. The volume of water is so huge that the water turns immediately into smoke on the whole waterfall.

These falls are not very large or very high, but their flow rate is very powerful. The name comes from the neighbouring island of Zambezi, where the natives performed all kinds of rites and sacrifices, considered by missionaries to be "diabolical".

BIG TREE

Along the Zambezi River path near the falls is one of the largest baobabs in Zimbabwe. It is 22 meters thick and rises to a height of 24 meters. Recently some scientists have estimated that this one is actually three trees connected to each other and therefore much younger than the 2,000 years it is given. Whatever the case, this baobab is impressive and well worth a visit on foot. The Zambezi Drive along the river leads directly to it from the parking lot of the falls.

MUSEUM

Like most of the major archaeological sites, Great Zimbabwe ruins have been largely looted and most of the objects found during excavations are scattered around the globe. The modest collection that has been preserved is now protected in a small museum, established at the entrance to the site. Tools and weapons can be seen, as well as some objects of oriental origin, proof of the commercial ties that Great Zimbabwe's powerful had, probably through Swahili merchants, not only with India but probably also with China and Persia. Apart from these few vestiges, the main interest of the museum lies in the seven birds (and half!) of soapstone exposed to them: about centimeters tall, these strange creatures became Zimbabwe's emblem and appear on the national flag, as well as on the country's stamps and official stamps. According to avertis avertis, it would be grossièrement eagles. Archaeologists, however, see mythological creatures that may have a function of totem; It is assumed that the volatiles sculptures were used by the rain makers or represented the spirits of the ancestors, according to the Rozvis, the dead turned into birds in order to win the sky.

The community of Tengenenge exhibits its work in an open-air art gallery. The gallery displays over 1,000 sculptures by more than 100 artists and sales are at much lower prices than in the rest of the country. Most of these artists live in Tengenenge themselves, each with their own booth where they display their work and a workshop where they make it. A museum has been built to house Tengenenge's earliest sculptures and to pay tribute to the sculptors of previous generations, as well as to display contemporary sculptures.

The National Gallery in Harare was established in 1957 from a collection of European works to which African works were added. Sculptures are displayed inside and in the gardens; paintings and a multitude of African art objects are found on the ground and upper floors. The visit is as interesting as it is instructive, revealing some of the lesser-known aspects of African traditions. The gallery also organizes numerous workshops, films, lectures and hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

CHINHOYI CAVES RECREATIONAL PARK

Natural site to discover

8 km from Chinhoyi, this recreational park was created in 1975 to protect interesting caves. These caves consist of a system of tunnels and caverns which unfortunately are slowly collapsing. These collapses can be noticed by sinkholes, sinkholes and depressions in the surroundings. The caves are mainly composed of the Wonder Hole, the Sleeping Pool and the Dark Cave . The Wonder Hole, a huge cave with a collapsed roof, has vertical walls of 45 meters overlooking the Sleeping Pool . A major curiosity of the site, this natural pool with crystal clear water illuminated by the sun, has a surprising blue color reflecting a depth of 91 meters. The Sleeping Pool is accessible in two ways. The first is to take the main entrance and land directly on the viewpoint, the second more sportive is to go through the Dark Cave tunnel, a real labyrinth, but the steps are steep and the passages narrow. Near the end of the Dark Cave there are three submerged tunnels. One of them leads to a small cavern known as the "blind cave". The second joins the Sleeping Pool 58 meters below the surface. The third has not yet been explored. It seems likely that other caves remain to be discovered. Since the temperature of Sleeping Pool never varies and remains at 22°C, research suggests that the water in the cave is connected to an even larger body of water.

DIANA'S VOW

Natural site to discover

One of the most interesting rock painting sites in the country dating back about two thousand years. Several theories try to explain the scene on this painting. None is unanimously accepted. Two theories put forward during the colonial era speak of the burial of a king and a social ceremony, but the majority speak of a trance ceremony to communicate with the Khoisan gods around a black antelope. The person in trance would enter the world of the gods to ask for peace, rain or the end of an epidemic.

WORLD'S VIEW

Natural site to discover

Not to be confused with the site of the same name in Matopos, this "world view" is a site overlooking large precipices and offering a beautiful panorama on the north of Zimbabwe, and in particular on the Connemara lakes, at least if the weather allows it, the fogs being frequent. It is also the highest point in the country accessible by car. Orientation tables are placed on the railing. The site is decorated with plantations and sculptures. Another viewpoint also located in the vicinity is called Eagle's View.

EPWORTH BALANCING ROCKS

Natural site to discover

These Balancing Rocks are the most famous in Zimbabwe along with those in the Matopos Mountains National Park. It is an interesting geological site, even appearing on the bond bills issued by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. The site also hosts some rock paintings, but for these, it is better to choose Domboshawa. Our advice is to avoid the complete visit if you go to the Matopos site, the latter is more impressive. On the other hand, the site can offer a pleasant half-day escape at the gates of the capital.

The 1,250 ha Nyazengu private reserve at the foot of Mount Nyangani is accessible from the parking lot at the start of the hiking trails (a gravel road preceded by a sign indicating "No Entry" leads to the private section, 5 km further on). The landscapes are similar to those of the park in which it blends, surrounded by marked walking paths, but some lead to natural pools dug in amber or to pretty waterfalls, such as the Nyazengu Falls, impressive 90-metre falls.
