OFFICE DU TOURISME

Tourist office

This small tourist office in the heart of Saint-Pierre is housed in the Maison de la Bourse, which hosted the first chamber of commerce on the island. It gathers a lot of information, brochures, and indications to visit the city of Art and History, and the surroundings. It also organizes thematic visits of the city, upon reservation and in small groups. As the ruins are not signposted, we advise you to have them indicated to you, it would be a shame to miss them! A great source of information about Saint-Pierre.

MAISON-BATEAU TORGILÉO

Mansion to visit

On the heights of Bellefontaine, a strange ship's prow dominates the town. The story goes that a certain Mr. Dubois was behind this strange dwelling, inspired by the modernist architecture of the time. Completed in 1948, this second home took the name Torgiléo from the first names of the Dubois family (Victor the designer, Virginie his wife, Leo their son). The interior is fitted out like a ship, with cabins and a promenade deck. If this private house cannot be visited, it promises some nice shots!

ÉGLISE SAINT-PIERRE-AUX-LIENS

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Built of wood and brown stone, Bellefontaine church dates back to 1962. Its bells are listed. A building with an original architecture (its bell tower is in fact separate from the main body), its construction is the fruit of the joint efforts of the people of Bellefontaine. Seeing that the old church was no longer able to accommodate the faithful, the population raised funds to build a new one. Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens retains six wrought-iron statues by Joseph René-Corail.

GIOPEINTURE

Places associated with famous people to visit
Open - and from 08h00 to 19h00

Developed under the Second Empire as a chic district of the capital away from the working-class Terres Sainville neighborhood, Giopeinture still maintains its bourgeois allure today. It's a pleasant place to stroll and look for vestiges of early 20th-century Art Nouveau architecture. The Villa Primerose (1906-1920) was one of the most successful examples: this historic monument unfortunately burned down completely in July 2014.

ÉGLISE SAINT-MICHEL

Religious buildings

This recent church is the heir to a succession of earlier buildings. The plans for an avant-garde church, imagined by Federico Genovese and Olivier Dubosq, after waiting for some 40 years, have finally been realized. The congregation can once again hear the five bells engraved with the names of their patrons (Saints Joseph, Michael the Archangel, Lawrence, Philomena and Our Lady the Great)—they were blessed on Christmas Day 2009. The materials used for its construction and the façade are similar to those of the building destroyed in 1973.

BUREAU DU GÉNIE ET DES PONTS ET CHAUSSÉES

Monuments to visit

Located at the eastern end of rue Levassor in the quartier du Fort, the Génie and Ponts et Chaussées offices occupy the site of a private house built in 1810, following the dismantling of part of the Larochetière dwelling at the end of the 18th century. In 1855, the site became the headquarters of the French Engineering and Civil Engineering Departments. The eruption of 1902 destroyed all structures except the terraces and retaining wall; the remaining buildings are in ruins. The site housed several buildings arranged in a tiered construction on several terraces linked by staircases. In the middle of the upper terrace was the main building, which housed the offices of the Engineering and Civil Engineering Departments. The back wall of this rectangular building was pierced by a double waterfall that fed a basin built at its foot. The middle terrace featured two large circular basins. On the lower terrace were two buildings: a guardhouse and stables. A striking feature of the site is the ingenious hydraulic system that supplied water via the canal du Fort to the Bureau du Génie and the Ponts et Chaussées, as well as to the Maison Coloniale de Santé opposite. The omnipresence of water is typical of pre-1902 Saint-Pierre: controlled runoff, cascading waterfalls, fountains and ornamental spray basins, a functional pool, running water upstairs.

PITON CRÈVE-CŒUR

Site of archaeology crafts and science and technology

Just a few kilometers from Martinique's most beautiful beaches, take the D9 towards Sainte-Anne for around 3 km to climb the Piton Crève-Coeur. Turn off at Cap-Chevalier and drive for 1 km. Turn right for 2 km and follow the unpaved road to the ruins of an old sugar mill. Leave your car in the dedicated parking area. Piton Crève-Coeur is an ancient volcano (18 million years old...), much older than Montagne Pelée, which today rises to an altitude of 200 m and offers breathtaking views of southern Martinique. Your walk begins on the right, with a path that climbs up, passing by ancient ruins: the main house of the Habitation Crève-Coeur. You soon come to a fine viewpoint over the island's southern peninsula. Further on, still in the direction of Sainte-Anne, a string of small coves invites you to unfold your towel and recharge your batteries. Cap-Chevalier offers windsurfing and kayaking programs. Anse-Michel, Baie des Anglais and Les Salines, coves and sandy beaches, also boast a small commercial infrastructure (food stores, restaurants) and sports facilities (jet-skiing, windsurfing). Don't forget to bring sun protection, light clothing and plenty of water - the sun can be fierce, especially in the middle of the day! Allow an hour and a half round trip, with a difference in altitude of around 150 meters.

HABITATION O’MULLANE – MAISON DU GAOULÉ

ÎLET RAMIERS

Natural site to discover

A small strombolian volcano a few hundred thousand years old, this islet was quickly equipped with an artillery piece and fortified to the point of becoming an essential device for the defense of the bay of Fort-de-France. From 1703 to 1739, more than 200 cannons were built in Martinique! The fort, a simple battery around 1728 until the fortification project in 1746, forbids any intrusion into the bay, by aligning itself with the Pointe-des-Nègres. Ilet Ramiers (or Ilet-à-Ramiers) is the entrance to Fort-de-France coming from the South coast and Pointe-des-Nègres is the entrance to Fort-de-France coming from the North Caribbean coast. This islet, almost impregnable, is nestled on a steep rock. The attackers could only approach it from one place: a landing stage protected by a guardhouse. At the top is a flat plateau—only accessible by a ladder 70 feet above the sea—consisting of three coastal batteries, military housing, and a gunpowder magazine; several of these buildings are listed as historic monuments. The rock played a defensive role until 1876 and then served as a lazaretto and military hospital for brief periods in addition to the Pointe-du-Bout fort. A military rest center in the 1960s, this 3-hectare islet is now a site protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral for its flora and fauna, in particular the Lesser Antillean iguana, an endemic species. It is forbidden to enter the site.

HABITATION LA SUCRERIE

Mansion to visit

The Habitation Sucrerie, refered to as a “château” (castle) by the locals, was acquired in 1788 by Jean-François Hayot; it was then the most important house in the commune.
Built on 200 m2, it was constructed during the second half of the 18th century. Its architecture is particularly original. It is characterized by a gallery on the north and south sides, a first floor narrower than the ground floor and, most original of all, an entrance on the side of the kitchen. As it should be, it dominates the village. About a hundred slaves were involved in running the place. A vestige of a cattle mill, rehabilitated into a coal oven, the basin of a spring already used by the Natives, the master's house below are the silent witnesses of the rough life of yesteryear. A family tradition runs along the old stones of the distillery and whispers that Arlet himself lived there. God only knows… Built in the second half of the 18th century, the building, entirely made of wood and bricks, seems to have been put to sleep by a nasty twist of fate. However, in an outbuilding adjoining the old, but no less famous kitchen of Père Labat, a community of white angels preserves the place. Here is the vegetable garden, formed by a masonry block, a storage space for the “potins” (cast iron container to hold the embers). There, the square well dating from 1914, a little further on a stone crucifix and, in the middle of a blue-painted Ave Maria, is a flowery grotto where Our Lady of Lourdes rests.

CAP MACRÉ

Natural site to discover

Moving in towards the sea, Cap Macré is bordered along its entire length by two very pretty beaches (to the north, Anse Grosse Roche) which meet at the end of the Cape.

Several hikes with beautiful beaches are located between Le Marin and Sainte-Anne.

From Le Marin, follow the direction of Sainte-Anne and then, at the traffic circle, turn left towards Cap Macré, in front of the residence Cap Evasion, renting furnished apartments by the month or by the week. The road, bordered by gentle hills with southern vegetation, is ideal for cyclists and hikers alike. A fork invites you to choose between Grand-Macabou on the left (stop at the pretty viewpoint on the sea a little further) and Cap Macré on the right. Cross the rock to go down to the cape, surrounded by scrubland. The Conservatoire de l'espace littoral et des rivages lacustres protects the natural site of the Grand-Macabou domain. It is located at the Cape Beauchêne: no beach, just a starting point for hikes. A small stone church, at the end of the cape, on the edge of the cliff, overlooks the sea.

You can follow footpath n° 29, the trace des Caps, which crosses the southern tip of the island from Cap Macré to Anse-Caritan. Remember to bring a bottle of water. A superb walk, with no major difficulties, except for its length. Count about 5 km from Petit-Macabou to Cap Macré, 7 km between Cap Macré and Cap-Chevalier, 6.5 km between Cap-Chevalier and the Baie des Anglais (Anse-Trabaud), 5 km between Anse-Trabaud, considered as the most beautiful beach of Martinique, and Les Salines, and 4.5 km from Les Salines to Anse-Caritan. This amounts to a total of 28 km from Petit-Caribou to Anse-Caritan (the sign indicates about 12 hours, but good walkers will do it in 6 hours without any problem).

From Cap Beauchêne to Cap Chevalier. On the way back to Sainte-Anne, reach Cap-Chevalier by a pretty road invaded by goats and lined with small white houses. The beach of Cap-Chevalier, nicer on its left side (with more sand and immaculate bottoms), is open to the Atlantic Ocean. Its narrow strip of sand is strewn with seaweed, rafts and a few fishermen's boats, from which the restaurants in the area get their supplies. You can dive with just a mask, fins, and snorkel to discover the rocky barrier. By choosing the road on the right, reach the seaside, in front of the “îlet Chevalier”, a nice opportunity for a beautiful marine stroll. You can get there with a shuttle called “taxicap”.

ÉGLISE DE SAINT-ESPRIT

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Founded in 1758, the Baroque-inspired church dominates the village of Saint-Esprit, making it its first historic monument. Its handsome volumes were altered several times following the hurricanes of 1951 and 1962. It houses a Russian bell known as Sebastopol, brought back from the Crimean War, in which a contingent of Martiniquais took part. To thank Martinique, Admiral Bruat, the island's former governor, brought back bells. Since then, the parish has been animated by numerous Sunday masses and choirs.

HABITATION PÉCOUL

Places associated with famous people to visit

Dating back to the second half of the 17th century, Habitation Basse-Pointe was originally owned by Claude Poquet, a historical figure who wore many political hats. At the end of the 18th century, the Habitation became the property of Denis Pécoul, deputy public prosecutor, and it was Jean-François Pécoul who gave it its definitive name in 1777. Towards the middle of the following century, Auguste Pécoul diversified cultivation, producing tobacco, coffee and silk in addition to sugarcane. Today, only bananas are grown. The property's layout is organized in such a way that the living space for the workers in huts unfolds around the main house, which is the heart of the estate, overlooking the coconut tree avenue. Listed as a historic monument in 1981, the main house is relatively well preserved. Rectangular in plan with no gallery, it is topped by a wasp-waisted second floor with a smaller perimeter. A sign of refinement on the part of the builders: the ashlar for the buildings was imported from Europe. The ruins of the factory chimney bear witness to the cane industry of yesteryear, while two Hindu temples bear witness to the survival of the ancient Tamils who arrived here in 1853 to make up for the shortage of manpower following the abolition of slavery in 1848. The dwelling was added to the heritage of the famous Habitation Clément (Le François) and Habitation Sucrerie in 2002. It is now managed by the Fondation Clément, which opens it to the lucky public during Heritage Days in September.
