Below the engineering offices, a psychiatric hospital housed the mentally ill from 1839 onwards. Organized around large promenade courtyards, dozens of small individual cells bear witness to the presence of over 200 inmates. You can discover modern therapeutic facilities based on hydrotherapy and restraint chairs. This particularly striking place tells the story of the beginnings of modern psychiatry. Legend has it that Victor Hugo's daughter, Adèle, was interned here following a broken heart.
