Pubs are generally open from 10.30am to 11.30pm Monday to Thursday, 10.30am to 12.30am on Friday and Saturday, and 12am to 11pm on Sunday.

Budget & Tips

A pint in a pub costs from €6, which you usually pay directly at the counter. There's no strict rule on tipping in Ireland, but of course a good tip is always welcome in the pub if you've had a sit-down meal. It's a good idea to leave around 10% of the total bill. Of course, all establishments accept credit cards. Please note that in Northern Ireland, where the currency is the pound sterling, a commission will be charged on each payment.

Age restrictions

To enter pubs, the minimum age is 18, and young adults are often asked to show ID.

What's very local

As soon as 5 p.m. rolls around and people start leaving the office, they rush to the pub with family and friends for a few pints and an Irish stew. At weekends, you'll find yourself lingering at the table for lunch, treating yourself to an extended Irish breakfast.

Kids

Families with children are not allowed in pubs after 9pm. If you're accompanied by your offspring, you'll have to leave at this time.

Smokers

Smoking is prohibited inside bars and restaurants. But most pubs have set up a terrace or patio, often heated in winter, for smokers.

Tourist traps

In Dublin's Temple Bar, there are plenty of touts offering you entry to the various pubs and nightclubs. Not sure you'll come across many locals in these establishments.
