The 4 seasons in the Netherlands

Winter is not the easiest season in the Netherlands. Winters are less harsh than in the past, but often windy and rainy. In recent years, a few cold spells over a period of ten days or so have allowed the canals to freeze over and a historic return to their roots, much to the delight of tourists who have been able to skate on the canals

Spring is without a doubt the ideal season to discover the country. It is during this period that the fields of flowers bloom and adorn the country with a thousand colors. Temperatures can remain cool and hail is common, but you may be treated to an early summer sequence that will be very pleasant.

Summer in the Netherlands is changeable, sometimes temperatures do not exceed 20 degrees and the air remains cool. In recent years, there have been heat waves. You can observe swimmers in the canals and a constant search for coolness. This is the most popular tourist season with long lines in front of all the attractions of the big cities.

Autumn is first of all a long Indian summer with beautiful colors and a pleasant atmosphere that lasts throughout the country. Showers can occur, but are often followed by sunny spells. The more the autumn advances, the more frequent the gusts and showers are!

Spring and summer: the queen seasons

Early spring (April and May) is undoubtedly the best time to visit the Netherlands: while the air can be cool, it is usually the driest time of the year and Holland is decked out in colorful flowers.

The peak season is in the summer, but Amsterdam is a year-round city. So plan to book your hotel nights before you leave! On the other hand, you will be visiting the city in large numbers and the lines at museums and attractions will sometimes seem endless.

"Buienradar", or the rain radar

The unpredictable weather of the Netherlands! To avoid any unwelcome rainfall, the Batavians use the Buienradar application which forecasts and visualizes with impressive accuracy, the precipitation over the Netherlands(bui meaning rain).

What do we put in our suitcases?

The onion principle is the basis: you layer your clothes. The seasons sometimes follow one another in an hour and you risk being overdressed! The locals seem to have a good resistance to cold and wind and as soon as the sun shines, you will see women in skirts and children in shorts. We recommend gloves and a hat in winter and we suggest you always bring a swimsuit in summer! Indeed, in the Netherlands, water is never far away, so take advantage of it!

In general, the country is not very particular, so there is no need to take your best clothes out even to enter a fancy restaurant. However, a certain effort will be appreciated for the most trendy addresses.

A word of advice: if you tend to sweat, don't forget to bring something to change into after your bike rides!

It looks like the South

It's not a legend, even in the south of the country, you will feel a difference in climate. Do you spend your time in Maastricht or Eindhoven in summer? You will definitely feel warmer than in Amsterdam or Rotterdam! Zeeland is known as the sunniest province in the country. Its beautiful beaches will make you look forward to the spring. You should always adapt your suitcase if you combine a tour of the Netherlands. Sunscreen and hygiene products are sold in drugstores (Etos or Kruidvat).
