Very popular and very celebrated, the German carnival takes place from November 11th to the end of February, more precisely from 11/11 to Ash Wednesday. This period is called Närrische Zeit, that is to say the "time of extravagances", where everything is allowed... We take advantage of it to dress up with the craziest costumes. If it is in Mainz and Cologne that the carnival is most joyfully celebrated - with many beers and big laughs -, broadcast on television, the Fasching (in the East and in Bavaria) or Karneval (in the West), is celebrated throughout the country. It reaches its peak in the first and last week, when masquerade costume contests are organized.
