The setting isn't fancy and the joint, tucked away at the back of Sunset Boulevard, is as tiny as the line is long. Several varieties of fried mines, corks and tasty dumplings are concocted there. You sit at a table among the locals and enjoy the atmosphere of a popular canteen. If there is no free stool (which often happens because of the narrowness of the place), you take everything with you. Allow a little time and be patient because the place is always full at peak hours.

We sit down directly at the fisherman's, who has a store and serves freshly grilled fish, and especially a Tino Rossi salad of which we will not reveal the secret... but... quickly, go ahead! Known throughout the island and adored by travelers for his incredible kindness, our man also takes whoever wants on his pretty pirogue: to Cocos Island and Catherine Islet, for 8 people maximum and with a picnic. Much more than a dinner or an excursion, it is above all the occasion of an extraordinary human meeting!

Designed by a lover of the sea and board sports, this is the coolest address in the area, as cool as the surfboards that decorate the place, the photos of kite or sailing, this beautiful old pirogue transformed into a bar. In the small room as well as in the courtyard, it is the kingdom of recuperation: from the ceiling hats to the cagettes-poufs. The menu is in harmony with the setting, unpretentious but copious, of Mauritian and Italian inspiration (pizzas). Also snacking: panini, croque, salad, French fries... It's THE traditional French bakery and patisserie in Mauritius, also present in Grand Baie and Port Louis, which respects the artisanal baking tradition of natural leavening for baguettes and special breads (tourte de seigle, boule aux céréales bio...) just like at home! What's more, only extra-dry Normandy butter is used for the viennoiseries, which have the crispiness of the good stuff! In the pastry department, everything is delicious! There's also a savoury section and a choice of drinks to enjoy on the premises (coffee) or to take away.

AKA Chu Fung Leung. LePetitFuté loves institutions, and this is one of them, firmly rooted in Chinatown since 1942 and proudly run by three generations of Chu family pastry chefs. It is frequented by the entire local Chinese-Mauritian community (but not only), who come here to stock up on Hakka cakes, moon cakes, wax cakes, peanut cookies, zongzi, etc., all names that evoke the unknown, travel, the delight of a sweet purchase in a store that has been refurbished but has retained its exotic charm. With its success, the little take-away food shop, so well placed in front of the beach, has become a full-fledged snack bar with chairs, tables, umbrellas, a semblance of a sheltered terrace... all cheerfully painted in blue, yellow and red, and adjoined by a few tin stalls lined up in front of the football pitch (coconuts, juice, candied fruits, etc.). You can sip a cold drink and/or eat one of the local fast food classics: boiled mines, Creole-style white rice, chicken curry, upside-down bowl, etc.

Located at the beginning of the street, close to the river, here is a small hut with a few tables that makes roast chicken aficionados happy! To take away or to taste on the spot, the poultry, golden brown, is cooked and juicy. The service is simple and efficient, with a little chat and little waiting. We also stop there to have a drink or to buy/swallow a small homemade sandwich ("varied choice" as the sign says) before going to survey the streets of the capital. A nice place to stop if you are in a hurry or if you don't want to be hungry.

All dressed in red, it's a gargote on the coastal road, known to the whole area and in front of which Christmas is simmering its pots. In a very small room slightly on a half level, one can taste the best dumplings from Trou d'Eau Douce and beyond, but also fried mines and other tasty popular Chinese dishes, or Mauritian dishes based on fresh products of the day. Drinks are at boutik price (= cheap Mauritian rate)and the service is nice as anything, in short here is a good plan as we love them!

In a "small" street full of "small" squares, a few steps from the city center, it is a "small" popular address as we like them, without any decoration effect, with just a few tables and chairs placed here and there. One lines up at the crack of dawn to take away Nabeel's famous briani presented in a big pot with tempting smells: chicken during the week, fish and beef on Saturdays, there is not a grain of rice left at the end of the day, nor even a roti, another popular specialty of the house!

It would be a bit like the local fast food, fast and crowded at peak hours, except that in addition to the speciality filled buns (the equivalent of our hamburgers, only better and healthier), they would also serve daily specials at very low prices - pork in wine, pineapple chicken, sweet and sour fish, octopus carry... To have lunch on the spot: a handful of tables on the first floor and on the sidewalk, a few others upstairs, and waiters who take off. Takeaway and home delivery on request. Efficient and cheap.

A few steps away from the market, on a wasteland with tables and benches laid out in the open air, several street vendors line up their fast food trailers. For three francs six pennies, you can eat small local dishes, sausages, kebabs, fried mines... in a nice popular atmosphere that is reminiscent of a pretty guinguette. A small note for the fragile stomachs: there is nothing to fear in opting for this kind of restaurant in Rodrigues where the products are fresh and often come directly from the vegetable garden and/or the sea.

At the crossroads, just in front of the covered market of Mont Lubin and close to the gas station, it is THE canteen of this part of the island, the one where the whole Rodrigues of the heights rushes. A "boutik" as we say here where only fresh, good, well cooked, tasty and copious food is served: fried mines, upside down bowls, snacks and daily dishes at low prices. On Fridays, Mirella prepares the typical Rodriguan dish based on pork curry, corn, brinjal and red beans. A nice and bright room where you can sit down and/or take away.

Well-known to local gourmets who used to come here to stock up on calissons and macaroons, Emma and her team run this little open-air café at one end of Ruisseau Créole. Here, a few ladies are busy concocting the famous cakes, and a selection of freshly homemade sushi, maki, sashimi and more, made to order. There's no mischief to be found on this relaxed terrace, where gourmet pleasures are the only thing on offer! Good news: honest prices mean you can enjoy twice as much. Also available to take away.

Brother of the famous Min Koo alias Marcel, the king of pork sausage, whose gleaming orange-yellow hut has always stood in the port area, Georges displays his Chinese origins through a simple and quick cuisine made mostly of boiled mines decorated in many ways - beef, chicken, minced pork, ourite, etc. We appreciate the impeccable cleanliness of the place and the friendly courtyard at the back. Also some chicken legs, pork chops or lamb chops with salad and chips.

This new artisanal pastry shop has taken up residence in the heart of Les Filaos Inn and is already receiving compliments from gourmands. Amélie concocts sweet delights to be savored in the calm of the garden with a fresh juice, an iced coffee, a milkshake: orange and almond cake, chocolate mousse dome, pie, cheesecake, etc. Everything is homemade! If you come by at any time for a sweet break, you can also sit down for lunch on the terrace and enjoy this little corner of greenery - choice of quiches, salads and daily specials.

It's a small grocery-cafe as we like it, respectful of the environment and short circuits, and offering mainly bulk products to limit two of the problems of our time, waste and overconsumption. You come directly with your jars (or you buy some on the spot) and you fill them with seeds, dried fruits, cereals, without forgetting the delicious preparations of Laetitia like these seed breads, dried fruits without sugar, cereal bars, tomato-pesto-avocado sandwiches, etc., to take away or to taste on the spot with a small coffee.

In the same decorative, plant-based spirit as the adjoining La Terrasse restaurant, these 3 kiosks are the fast, cheap version of the Quartier des Serres. Fancy a fresh juice, a smoothie, a local street food snack or a sweet treat? This is the place to be when you don't have the time or inclination to grab a bite to eat, before or after your visit to the Château. You can order takeaway or sit at one of the high tables. Tamarin beach, especially the sandbox just in front of the Veranda Hotel at the car park at the entrance to the bay, is home to one of the best dumpling vendors on the island. As always, the length of the tail acts as a cursor. At the same time, it underlines the taste quality of this Asian street food dish at an unbeatable price. Even if you're there, you'll be tempted by several flavours: meat, fish, vegetables, chicken... whether or not to be accompanied by mines or fried rice. A delight!

French retirees on a long stay in the area as well as vacationers looking for authentic local addresses swear by it! For years, this popular canteen has been delighting customers with its simple and tasty dishes based on super fresh products: boiled mines, fried rice, onion fritters, seafood stir-fry, octopus salad, meefoon broth, etc. Of course, the setting is not very nice and the wait is sometimes long because of the success, but the service is smiling, the quality-price ratio is excellent. And it's so good!

Adjacent to the Sands Grill and managed like it by the Sunlife hotel group (i.e. the assurance of good services and quality products), it is the largest beach bar on Ile aux Cerfs, open to all and relaxed like a big straw hut on the sand. On the spot, in addition to offering a nice selection of arranged rums and freshly squeezed juices, the waiters concoct mocktails and shake cocktails. Ah! that little pina colada sipped with your feet in the sand! Also a menu of snacks and homemade pizzas.
