CILANTRO

Gastronomic Restaurant €€€

Chef Takashi Kimura brings together French technicality and Japanese poetry in tasty, elegant dishes. The interplay of textures and the marriage of flavors testify to his technical mastery. Inspiration is drawn from a seasonal repertoire, such as the melt-in-your-mouth wagyu beef cheek and tongue with Madeira sauce, or the delicate carpaccio of sweet shrimp with salmon roe. A plush setting, French-style service, an impressive wine list and a French sommelier complete this masterful gastronomic experience.

BALIN ROOF GARDEN

French cuisine restaurant €€
4/5
1 review

On the roof of the Nak Hotel, this beautiful terrace overlooking the city is the ideal place to enjoy a good pizza or sip a cocktail. The setting is modern and cosy, all in white, barely broken up by chequered tiles and wooden chairs that will remind older diners of school. The menu gives pride of place to fresh, sourced produce: the lamb comes from New Zealand, the mackerel comes from the nets of local fishermen and is accompanied by a pomelo salad. There's also a children's menu, featuring dishes from the menu in mini-portions.

U-LANG CORNER

French cuisine restaurant

An address that doesn't look like much, behind the slightly decrepit green walls of a neighborhood house. A lot of effort has gone into the repainted dining room. One of Kelantan's specialties: nasi kerabu. The only difference: instead of being bluish in the Malay style, the rice here is green, because it's cooked with some forty herbs! The owners are Sino-Thai, and this is a Thai recipe known as khau jan. The chicken is as tender as you could wish, the vegetables as fresh as you could wish, and given the price, you could well have a second plate.

MEDAN SELERA KEBUN SULTAN FOOD COURT

French cuisine restaurant

There's no city without a food court, and this one is open from morning to night. It's huge, housed in a large neon-lit hall. The numerous stalls serve Chinese specialties such as char kway teow, chicken rice, noodles sautéed with fish balls, as well as a few Thai specialties. As always, you choose your table, place your order and pay each vendor individually on delivery.

ZHAI HONG RESTAURANT

French cuisine restaurant

Chicken rice is a no-nonsense dish in Malaysia. There are pages and pages on the subject on the Internet. Chai Hong is one of the best places to try this steamed chicken. Its reputation extends beyond the borders of the city and even the state. It is served as it is in Ipoh, with bean sprouts. On the other hand, you'll need to be patient before you can taste it. There's often a queue, and once you're seated at your table, you'll have to wait another 30 to 45 minutes. The service is in no hurry.

HAYAKI KOPITIAM

French cuisine restaurant

This Kopitiam has all the makings of a cafeteria and none of the charm of a traditional café. Nevertheless, it remains a refreshing stop-off and a must for a bubble tea (iced tea with tapioca beads) or a steaming coffee. Of course, you can also dine on simple, quick-to-prepare dishes such as nasi dagang or laksa. If your guesthouse doesn't serve breakfast, you can make up for it here with French toast, a welcome change from nasi goreng. A good place to relax in comfort and recharge your batteries.

ENGLISH TEA HOUSE

French cuisine restaurant €€

If Malaysians have retained a British tradition, it's that of high tea, accompanied by pastries and cookies. The setting, a colonial-style bungalow in the middle of an English garden, lends itself particularly well to a moment of nostalgia. The view over Sandakan Bay is magnificent from here. You can also come for lunch, and sample classic British dishes such as beef stew, fish & chips and scone for dessert.

GOLDEN DRAGON

French cuisine restaurant

In Chinatown, this restaurant is one of the most popular with tourists and local Chinese alike. It's best to come early (before 7.30pm), if you don't want to queue. Chinese food is served at large round tables under neon lights. As is often the case, the setting is non-existent and the pleasure is all in the plate. In addition to marinated pork and lemon chicken, you'll find a wide range of fish and seafood dishes. If you're not in the mood for spicy food, try the steamed teo-chew fish.

1919 RESTAURANT AND GALLERY

French cuisine restaurant €€

This Ipoh institution stands out for its elegant setting and refined ambience. You're welcomed into a large room with a false ceiling of woven palm leaves and round tables framed by bistro chairs. Delicious Chinese hakka cuisine is served here, as well as Nyonya and more broadly Pan-Asian-inspired dishes. One of the house specialties is the Philippine eggplant plate. A real treat that will make you want to come back again and again.
