LE LOTUS ROUGE
Read moreThe Lotus Rouge is a timeless place with an eclectic decoration. As far as the bar is concerned, the food is quite good and the cocktails are successful, but the Lotus Rouge is above all an atypical place, full of creativity and dedicated to the promotion of art in the broadest sense of the word with numerous cultural events: exhibitions, concerts, theater, conferences, etc. The setting is unique, with trampolines, swings, musical instruments, carnival masks... and a thousand small objects designed to awaken the senses and promote exchanges. A must-see in Playa.
CANTINA LA COYOACANA
Read moreWe really like this traditional Cantina, which also offers good food. The atmosphere is always relaxed and warm. Locals gather here for a friendly family time, helped by the great drinks menu. Concerts are often organised, and the place even has its own mariachi trio! Authentic atmosphere guaranteed in this Cantina just a stone's throw from the Plaza Hidalgo. Another asset of the place: it has a pleasant open-air garden at the back of the bar.
LA NUEVA BABEL
Read moreWe love this small cultural café with its intimate atmosphere, where jazz, son jarocho and trova concerts are held almost daily. There are several small rooms with a subdued atmosphere, as well as a small inner courtyard ideal for smoking while drinking a good draught. The establishment serves food from breakfast until late at night (the tlayudas are particularly good). It is the most bohemian and relaxed bar in the center of Oaxaca. Here you can meet hippies and travelers from Mexico and beyond.
LA ANTIGUA PAZ
Read moreOpened in the 1930s, it is the oldest cantina in the city. Contrary to the custom that still prevails in some remote areas of Mexico, women are admitted here, as the place is relatively quiet. People don't necessarily come here to get drunk, but rather to play dice or dominoes with friends, with an occasional tequila. La Antigua Paz welcomes a rather diverse clientele made up of students and cowboys alike. On the walls are exhibited vestiges of the revolution. Authentic.
LA OPERA
Read moreWe love this restaurant-bar that has kept its late 19th century decor and is full of history. At the time, this place was frequented by various personalities, including the president Porfirio Díaz. For the little story, Pancho Villa, wanting to make feel the power of "those from below", entered La Opera on horseback and shot a bullet in the ceiling! During the revolution, Zapata also passed through here with his soldiers. It is advisable to have a glass of tequila (the specialty of the house), in the evening, but peacefully... Beautiful.
