There is no departure tax if your stay is less than 31 days. If you stay from 1 to 3 months, you'll have to pay an additional $3,500, $5,600 from 3 to 9 months, and $7,000 from 9 months to 1 year.

Read morePunta Cana airport is the busiest international airport in the country! It is served by international and charter airlines, domestic Dominican airlines and taxi planes that can be chartered. Air France and Air Caraïbes offer direct flights from and to Paris, Charles de Gaulle and Orly respectively. Whichever resort you have booked at, they all have shuttles that will pick you up. Otherwise, car rental is available here.

Some domestic flights also allow to reach the capital (110 km) and other parts of the Dominican Republic. It is also possible to rent small private planes to travel within the country.

The Dr Joaquin Balaguer airport also offers international flights, but only to the Caribbean. Be careful, the road to get there is not well signposted. Do not hesitate to ask for directions, the locals will tell you how to get there.

Read moreThe airport of Barahona is located at 5 km of the downtown area. It serves Santo Domingo all year round, and San Juan in high season. This small airport was used for some time as a runway for international aid to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. The site is named after the famous Dominican actress Montez (1912-1951), who was born in Barahona. No restaurant service on site.
